PC problem
Hey guys the past 2 days i have been having a problem with my pc! It keeps shutting off every time. It loads windows and all but when i get in game it shuts off after a few minutes. Note also that it shuts off sometimes when i am not even in game and i dont run any other programs!
To be more detailed i dont have a door to the side of the tower and it is been open for 1.5 years now. There is lots of dust to be honest... Please let me know what it is!!! Before i take it to Stone computers repair shop and waste my money... Thank you in advance! |

Re: PC problem
1.) Clean it out, Compress air can FTW.
2.) If you can get your hands on a power supply tester then use that. 3.) Replace/Trade out your power supply and see if that fixes it 4.) If not then it could be for a multitude of different reasons, i.e. wires shorting but it's most likely the power supply failing.

Re: PC problem
Yes. Listen to Hades.
Most CPUs -- especially Intel -- will restart to prevent meltdown (literally). Dust is cancer to your computer. Can o' air that shit and clean all the fans. Make sure all the fans are rotating freely and that you didn't have one go out on you. If everything is clean, all fans are working, and you still have the problem, replace PSU.

Re: PC problem
When cleaning it out, don't do what Goldy did and poke the CPU with your finger.

Re: PC problem
Some other things you can check.
Make sure your CPU fan is seated correctly. Sometimes if you move your computer the CPU can shift causing it to not be seated correctly and not make good contact with the CPU. Reapply thermal compound and reseat as necessary. Like mentioned above make sure all fans are clean. Check the edges especially as any build up on the ends will slow air flow. Check your Video card, make sure the fan is clean, all power connectors are seated and that the card is getting good airflow. If your case has a means of exhausting air, make sure that the flow from the front of the case to the rear is not developing superheating. Superheating is when the incoming air is warm and then is passed over a heatsource then passed over another thereby superheating the air. Also like mentioned above check your powersupply for any major voltage variations. Also check your plug to make sure there is no "dirty power" comming in. Check the ground. If the voltage is higher that 1 then your getting dirty power returns.

Re: PC problem
My advice:
1. Trow it 5 times against the wall. 2. Trow it 5 times against the floor. 3. Smak your chair 5 times on it. Let me know if its still not working. |

Gio Wrote:Well i try to open it today and see what is going on with it and i could not get it to start.... The beeping noise is probably a post code (ie, a series of beeps that tell's you what's wrong. My first thought, either the power supply is toast, or the cpu fan is plugged up so bad it won't spin, thus causing the overheating, and the mobo's shutting everything down before too much damage is done. I had a similar problem. Turned out I cracked the cpu when I put the fan on it. But yeah, good advice above, might even want to can of compressed air, start with the cpu fan, see if you can move it first thing, and if so, it'll probably be quite tight. Blow that out, if your vid card has a fan, do the same thing, and check the vents in your power supply as well, they can also get plugged right up. If you can find out the exact model of your motherboard, you can look up the beeps to narrow down the problem. |

Re: PC problem
Definately sounds like that Teo. You can get a psu tester for like $20, might be worth it.

Re: PC problem
The rule of thumb when it comes with PSU's is that if it starts making a noise is to replace it. While the computer may power up and function the PSU could be putting out nonstable voltages. Those tiny fluxuations can kill a board or ram or even a video card after a while. So it is best to replace it.
