Picking a college (Merced vs Riverside)

So yeah I'm picking between UC Riverside and UC Merced. Both have good engineering programs but Merced is the newest school here, opened in 2006-7 and has the latest labs/programs (more chances to get to do research, etc). Riverside on the other hand has an older department (meaning more ties to research companies, other schools, etc) and is much closer to Los Angeles.

Main reason I'm picking between these 2 UC's is that they gave me a shitload of grant $. By the end of 4 years I'll have to pay about 43k in loans for Merced and 40k for Riverside, estimated yearly cost for Merced is 29.5k and 28k for Riverside.

Distance wise, Riversides like 1.5 hrs away and Merceds like 4. Thinking the farther the better?

So yeah, I gotta pick one by May 1st and accept grants, etc.

I picked riverside. if your staying in dorms/not in your own house you really dont have to talk to your family often. i was an hour away last year and saw them three times, and i really like my family!

Riverside being an older institution is probably better connected with local engineering firms and there may be more opportunity for jobs after you graduate. Also advising is a really important part of your first year, and i feel like the level of advising there is superior to a newer school. and remember "Newer labs don't always mean newer technologies". Our science building here is fantastic but beakers are beakers and flasks are flasks, or in your case, cad is cad

Look at the companies that are around the area of each university, most likely those will be the companies that they will be working with closely, clusters are very big today, most likely the new university will have set up around multiple companies that specialize in what the school specializes in. It could also be the other way around in which the companies set up around Riverside because they know that they produce some of the best students/results at the end of the day.

Not sure if that helps, but its always good to look at what companies around the schools you are planning to go to.

The campus for the college that I went to was around multiple companies that specialize in marketing and ebusiness which is what I did, and the campus was only a few years old, but they had lots of connections to the businesses around them even though they were only there for 2 - 3 years.

So I picked UCR and the system to submit the Statement of Intent to Register (SIR) is down or something and I gotta do this by 11:59 am tomorrow and freaking out. RAGE RAGE RAGE.

Yeah kept checking every hour, ruined my sleep. Came back up around 6:30 am and I got it in, now I gotta study and review 4 years of math classes so I can place into calculus. FML

gonna stock up on Geometry, Algebra 2, Pre-Calc, and Calculus review books.
