Math Problem

Math Problem
Simple math problem that was giving my dad trouble. See if you can figure it out.

So my dad changed the coolant on one of his cars. The coolant system requires 20 quarts, which is 50% water and 50% coolant. He flushed the system with distilled water and has been adding coolant back into system. Right now he is at 8 quarts coolant and 12 quarts water (Because he can remove 8 quarts at one time if its full, hence 20-8=12q water plus 8 q coolant brings it back to 20q). In order to get it back to 50-50, how much of the mixture does he have to remove and how much water or coolant or water&&coolant does he have to put back in. Looking for the answer that results in the least amount of waste.

Re: Math Problem
Aren't you supposed to flush the whole thing? Wouldn't partially removing coolant by adding distilled water just dilute the coolant?

So technically he should flush the old coolant out completely and then pour a mixed 50/50 solution. Otherwise you would have to balance the 50/50 ratio of water and coolant to make sure it's not too diluted.

-- Mon May 03, 2010 7:02 pm --

Solution: remove 3.3 quarts of the 12w/8c solution.

Re: Math Problem
I'll assume you mean to add 3.3 quarts of coolant too.

well once you remove the 3.3 quarts of solution you got 10q water and 6.7 coolant so yeah...
