They usually have effective ranges around 1200 yards but they can probably fire farther, they did a piece on this range of sniping on the Military Channel (forgot which show).

I also think the article has the wrong model number for the rifle used, L115A3 is probably the correct one but then there are multiple varients of it.

Accuracy International was featured in the show and there new sniping system which includes the rifle and a handheld computer for the spotter, this makes it possible to engage targets over a mile away. Cause the math is freaking rediculous and much easier when done in the handheld, just gotta feed in distance (laser range unit or something), weather conditions, similar stuff. The computer can apparently then tell you the adjustments you need to make to the huge sights and shit.

At 1000 yards, a minute of angle worth of miscalculation is 10x what it is at 100 yards.

1 minute of angle>>>100yards>>>1 inch at target.

The curvature of the planet varies in steepness depending on your latitudinal positioning. At the equator, the planet curves at approximately 8 inches per mile.

Afghanistan is at approx. 30 degrees N latitude. Thus the circumference, and therefore curvature of the Earth would be 70% @ 30 degrees latitude that of the rate of curve at the equator. 5.6 inches per mile. Around 5 inches every 1000 yards. That puts the shooter at aiming half a minute of angle lower than he would have if he had not taken this into account in the first place. The translated 15 inches high or low on target is the difference between shooting center mass, shooting above the target's head, or taking out a leg.

The rotation of the planet accounts for the target being .006 minutes of angle in a different place in an actual minute of time. At 3k yards, a target moves .004 minutes of angle (at rifle) in the time it takes the round (3000 ft/s muzzle velocity from the L11583) to get there.

If the shot was taken from east to west, the target would be about a 10th of an inch farther away than if the shooter had not taken this into account (closer for an east>>west shot). A north to south shot would mean the same 10th of an inch to the shooter's left (backwards for a south>>north shot).

This isn't even accounting for things like multiple wind speeds and directions, barometric pressure, etc. You also have to figure the amount of luck involved with that kind of shot.

Is the target going to move in the 3 seconds it takes for that round to get there?

What happened here is literally the perfect shot + luck... And they (him and his spotter) did it twice.
