[THANATOS Wrote:.Spluff"]There is no such thing as 'proper' picking grip, metal. As long as the only movement taking place is in your wrist picking grip is entirely up to personal choice. Yngwie Malmsteen and Michael Angelo Batio both use a non standard style of picking and they are faster than 99.9% of us will ever be. I use a non standard picking style and I can easily do your boring zakk wylde/dimebag style 'shred' stretch pentatonic. It's more a matter of perfecting what you find to be most comfortable than attempting to emulate somebody elses style.Wow, who pissed in your cheerios?

Re: Young ass kids with talent.
Why does correcting an incorrect piece of advice mean somebody 'pissed in my cheerios'?

Both the great Swedish donut, and Batio use correct grip and angle of the pick. The only thing unorthodox about Batio is, he picks more from his thumb and forefinger moving back and forth than anything else. As far as comfort goes, you can become comfortable holding the pick any damn way you want if you do it enough, and can get a decent amount of speed by doing it that way for a long enough period of time, but you're not going to really be able to burn. I know, because I passed that roadblock years ago. It's far easier to continue playing with bad habits and improper technique while focusing on your strengths than it is to take the time to fix all the stuff you've been doing wrong. Some people use whatever technique they've been using for years even if it's not the most efficient way of doing things, and that's fine -- I use science and physics. Just because other players have figured this out before me, doesn't mean dick. Let's not forget that all the great players got to where they are by watching how THEIR influences did things and emulated them. Edit: Also, it took Zakk and Dime their entire lives to be able to play like that. If it's so easy for you, how come you're not on the cover of magazines and shit?

[THANATOS Wrote:.Metal"]Both the great Swedish donut, and Batio use correct grip and angle of the pick. The only thing unorthodox about Batio is, he picks more from his thumb and forefinger moving back and forth than anything else. Sorry, I meant Batio and Morse. Batio anchors with three fingers and therefore picks with a different motion to the established standard, and Morse holds the pick with three fingers and points his pick towards the bridge. [THANATOS Wrote:.Metal"]Some people use whatever technique they've been using for years even if it's not the most efficient way of doing things, and that's fine -- I use science and physics. Just because other players have figured this out before me, doesn't mean dick. Let's not forget that all the great players got to where they are by watching how THEIR influences did things and emulated them. Within reason, I believe that differences in how you hold a pick will make only an infinitesimal difference to your top picking speed. I can't see any real scientific evidence that there is one picking position that gives you a huge edge over the others. [THANATOS Wrote:.Metal"]Edit: Also, it took Zakk and Dime their entire lives to be able to play like that. If it's so easy for you, how come you're not on the cover of magazines and shit? Dimebag and Zakk's recognition are from their song writing abilities and their compositional skills. Their speed and technique (except for a few exceptions) are in most cases, quite standard in their songs - whilst they may be able to play blistering fast, on record it's typically slowed right down. Most fast players don't typically play at their maximal speed - look at Vai & Satriani, both are capable of playing blisteringly fast, but they will generally play at a more moderate pace in their recordings. This is why they are much more famous and sell more albums that somebody like Batio who just shreds all day without a particularly interesting composition. |

Re: Young ass kids with talent.
[THANATOS Wrote:.Spluff"] Email anybody that's faster than Steve Morse and ask them why they don't hold the pick like Steve Morse. [THANATOS Wrote:.Spluff"]Dimebag and Zakk's recognition are from their song writing abilities and their compositional skills. Whoah wait, I thought they were "boring." How come you've got so many interviews and whatnot askin' them wtf is goin' on with their lead playing? Nickelback is recognized for song writing, there are lead breaks in their music, I don't see this happening to them. Also, I didn't ask you why Batio isn't on the cover of magazines, I asked you why YOU weren't, since you're obviously a better player than both Zakk and Dimebag by your claims. You'll never catch me saying I'm better than any of the guitarists mentioned in this thread. Even if other people said that, I'd never say it myself. Not in a million years. You gotta stay humble to make progress. All other points I can agree with.
