Well, I hopped on my fav. computer store website today. Low and behold! The Radeon 4890!!! in stock! Ok, was thinking about a new monitor too. Hmmm, ACER 25.5 inch! In stock! Well, shit, time to go spend some money. Wheeeee! Grabbed 'em both, and a dvi to dvi cable that I actually didn't need. Ahhh, well, so, boot up XP, uninstall catalyst drivers, shut down computer. Now, swap cards, fucking things HUUUUUUGE!!!! Pack 200lb CRT monitor down to basement, hook up BIG ASS monitor, run the dvi to hdmi cable to it, and power cable. Reboot. Hmmm, chug chug chug. Starts booting Win 7. Fails. Ask me if I want to repair or install. Hmmm. That ain't good. Reboot again, no boot options (Win 7 or earlier version) back to Win 7 failed install thingy. Hmm, ok, check cables, all look fine, double check mobo connections (1 ram stick now not all the way in, fucking vid card is so long it popped the bottom holding pin out. Ok, move ram, reseat, reboot, into bios. Ok, it's seeing both ram sticks now, and all hd's. Enable the smart thing for hd's. Reboot. Ok, clicking noise from 1 drive and smart telling me drive is about to fail. Yay. Ok, power down, disconnect it, move other drive on that cable to master, move jumper on it, reboot. Bios sees the drive, no smart drive errors. Install Win 7 (again) after formatting my 10K rpm drive, put it on there. Okeedoke, hunkydory. Can't get the catalyst drivers installed for nothing! Won't create the directory or load the drivers. Brand new 4890 1 gig DDR5 is seen as a vista compatable card. That's all. Shit! Ok, go searching the weeeeb. Find some sort of hacked version of the new drivers. They seem to install ok, can now set my dual display, device manager shows as an ATI 4800 series card with 1 gig ram and say's it working fine. Run performance test. Card tests at 6.8. Still on a slow ass AMD 64X24400 with just 2 gig of ram. (always thought I had 4). Anyway, still trying to get it to see that one drive (just said it found it) and of course, that's the the one where I have everything backed up. Anyways, that's where I am, so if I'm not around in hurry, you know where I am.

What a fucking nightmare! After losing my old XP setup. I installed Vista, got all that working, loaded AAO and vent, got vent going, AAO kept giving me Punkbuster OS exception error and crapping out. Ran it as admin, ran it as admin on XP w. sp2 and sp3, verified punkbuster a and b were working, etc. Still no way to stay connected. Fuck it. Format drive, re-install XP Pro w sp3. Finished. Just spent 4 hours trying to get it to FIND the fucking vid card and install the drivers for it. Ended up having to use the actual cd that came with the card. :-\ Anyway, it say's it's installed, I have the catalyst working, vents installed, aao's installed, let's see if it works this time!
