Re: Vista and XP on same puter
I never tried it, but from what I've heard, I think you need to install the XP first before the Vista for dual boot.

Re: Vista and XP on same puter
Doesnt matther wich one u install first but
xp first then vista is easiest.. install xp,then make a partion for vista.. can have them on same HDD but not on same partion then it will go nuts on ya... Follow this Guide : <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://apcmag.com/how_to_dual_boot_vista_and_xp_with_vista_installed_first__the_stepbystep_guide.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://apcmag.com/how_to_dual_boot_vist ... _guide.htm</a><!-- m --> or if u want to do it with style u just go for a virtual vista or virtual xp that's pretty easy and doesnt take so much place on ur HDD FOR Virtual vista <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.computerperformance.co.uk/vista/virtualpc2004.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.computerperformance.co.uk/vi ... pc2004.htm</a><!-- m --> for Virtual Xp <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://lifehacker.com/software/windows/geek-to-live--run-windows-xp-inside-vista-with-virtual-pc-238071.php" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://lifehacker.com/software/windows/ ... 238071.php</a><!-- m --> i would go for the Virtual couse it's easy and u dont have to reboot ur comp everytime u want to switch os.. B-) im running virtual xp and it works good... NOTICE!! im not a neard just a simple kid with no life =)) (joke) |

Re: Vista and XP on same puter
Seeing as you are primarily looking to game, using a virtual machine isn't really a viable option. Sure, it's easier to install a virtual XP and you don't have to reboot, but the performance will be much, much, less, and you will probably encounter lots of problems down the line.
Just follow a dual boot guide (the one Yogster posted is fine), and you should have no problems. |

Re: Vista and XP on same puter
There's a bunch of different options here. All depends on how you want to run it.
I use one drive for OSs (Xp and Windows 7), another for games, and another for my music related stuff. Having a dedicated HD for each OS is the easier option since you won't have to reformat any of your existing drives to set it up with a dual partition. As Spluff said, don't run a virtual OS, not if you're going to be installing games on it.

Re: Vista and XP on same puter
I'll walk you through it today.
Since you have Vista already installed and only have on partition you will have to first shrink the original partition and great another partition from the space you created. You then install XP on that partition. After installing XP, the mbr is sometimes screwed and you will have to insert and boot from your Vista DVD and use the Auto repair function. You should then be able to boot into any windows installation you want. I can walk you through it when I get home.

Re: Vista and XP on same puter
XP actually works. Most of the bugs have been worked out. Except for the fact that any MS operating system essentially turns itself into a virus.
Vista is simply a bloated slow ass piece of crap, but I does run DX10 and makes games purdier. Windoze 7 is actually a good OS! :-o It's what Vista SHOULD have been. But I couldn't get it to run Punkbuster. So it was useless for AAO for me. Hence the dual boot comp. B-) |
