If money is the main concern the Phenom X3 or X4 is the best bang for the buck right now. But as many others have said, yeah, best out and out performance right now is the I7. It'll probably be my next CPU unless AMD comes out with something amazing.

I still think best bang for the buck is ATI though, and I've NEVER had a problem with black or blank screenshots. My 4890 is running every game I have at 1600X1200 or better. My only system slowdown right now is the old AMD 64X2 4400.

I unfortunately didn't wait for i7 and got the q9450, but it's pretty good too.

Can burn dvd's, encode movies, extract large .rar files, and listen to music or play AA at the same time. So awesome.

I'd probably pair an ATI card with an intel CPU, but there's not really much between them all at the moment.

i7 is faster and can be overclocked easily, even without OC it is the fastest consumer chip (family) out there.
