Lenovo (IBM) makes some good laptops at that price.

Re: friends looking for gg deals on laptops
I'd say eBay cause with laptops it goes like this:

New laptop from bestbuy [Bestbuy and Fry's are ripoffs when it comes to laptops] ($800)...

Same laptop on ebay that's in good condition ($500) [Tigerdirect & Newegg also have good deals on laptops on which you can save around $100]

A friend of mine just got an HP tablet laptop that retails for 800-900 on ebay for about 550-600 with shipping and it runs perfectly fine.

But if you go the desktop route then you might want to buy a media center pc that has a built in HDMI (if that's what he meant by DMI) connection or buying a graphic card with an HDMI compatible output. More than likely his tv also supports component connections and maybe even DVI, but DVI is video only and that leaves you with component being a viable tv output connection that's cheap and easy to use. HDMI is still not as common on most pc's so it can add to the cost but you should be able to build/buy a desktop that allows this + more for under 1000.

I say HELL NO to eBay!
I would buy it from Dell Outlet. I get an email for 15% off every now and then for Inspiron or XPS systems (laptops and PCs) from Dell Outlet. If he's willing to wait, I will PM you the code once I get it, usually weekly. Their outlet have Certified Refurbished, Scratch and Dent, & Previously Ordered New items. All with 1 yr. service warranty and free shipping.
