Raptor HDs
Since my hd is fucked, i want to a get a raptor, the 300 gig ones which is around 300 bucks with tax. I was wondering if they put off alot of heat, cause everything in my cause is rly close to together and im afraid that the hd might put off a lot of heat since its 10000rpms, and i dont have to much air flow aside from the like 6 fans in my case. Im using a mid tower case and all the parts are big and close together.

Re: Raptor HDs
Go with SSD (80 Gig or 160) and then get a standard SATA drive for additional storage.

Re: Raptor HDs
I'm running a Corsair performance 128 gig SSD as my OS hard drive, then have a 300 gig velocirapter as my games drive, with a 1.5 something or other as my granny tranny and back up stuff. Works good, not cheap, but fast as hell. O:-) Tongue

Re: Raptor HDs
Im looking into this again, except not at the VR HD's, but into what you guys recommended about the SSD. The one problem is that I just dont feel like spending the money on a one because the price should drop within the next few months. So i was looking at just getting a regular HD for now and then get the SSD once the prices come down, but then when i was looking @ prices i saw these bundles that the store i shop @ were offering.

<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.canadacomputers.com/bundle_info.php?bundle_id=030034" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.canadacomputers.com/bundle_i ... _id=030034</a><!-- m -->

Is there anything wrong with the OCZ Vertex drives, I've read a few reviews that were mixed, but other than that the bundle looks pretty good to me. The only problem I have with this one is that I wanted the Caviar black, with the 6gb interface:

<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?DriveID=792" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?DriveID=792</a><!-- m -->

Heres my specs:
E8400
4gbs DDR2 1200
Asus P5E Deluxe Mobo

Re: Raptor HDs
just got an email from tigerdirect, they've got the 300 gig velocirapters on for $300 cdn. with that price, that's probably free shipping as well, that's probably your best bet, for price/peformance right now. With the SSD drives, you have to make sure they're capable of running TRIM, don't ask me what it stands for, it's only available in Win 7. The drive I have isn't set for trim yet, but it's capable. So, my next c:\ wipe, I'll be reformatting the SSD with a little program from OCZ, that formats it and activates the trim mode. So, with the ssd drives, you want to check which controller it uses (some are a lot faster than others) and the trim setting, some of the ssd's are easily upgraded to trim with just a firmware update as well. But yeah, with either a raptor or ssd, you won't believe the difference in speed. Bootups, program start ups, etc. Well worth the money if you can afford them.

Re: Raptor HDs
I have haven't gotten an SSD yet, still running 2 500 gig's in raid. But I'd go with Sneye's advice. As for the reviews, you have to remember that most of them are posted by people with complaints.

I guess I should elaborate: 1000 people buy product x. 850 people are happy with the purchase and everything works fine, ~50 people like it and also post positive reviews, but ~100 people have problems with it and the majority will post negative comments or reviews.

So if you have a problem with something, you're more likely to post a negative comment/review where as if you had no issues you would probably not post/publish anything at all.

Re: Raptor HDs
I was just wondering about the reviews because the prices seem ridiculously low compared to other ssd's so i was under the impression that they were low end ones and some ppl who reviewed it said they were better than the intel extreme and mainstream models.

Sneye, never buy @ tigerdirect, they rip you off most of the time (sometimes they have a good deal), the 300 gig VR is $209 @ can computers, they are selling a 600GB model for $300 which is what im considering as well.

<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.canadacomputers.com/index.php?cPath=15_210_212&sort=2a&page=3&sid=3k2cnkvdkha9h8k7caufkdpo56" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.canadacomputers.com/index.ph ... caufkdpo56</a><!-- m -->

One more question, the caviar black, and the VR say they have a 6GB SATA interface, was just wondering if I can use that with my mobo since SATAII is a 3GB interface.

Do the bundles look good though? maybe I'll get the 60GB SSD with a TB harddrive, and a 600GB VR

Hades, i was looking into going with 4 WD Caviar Black HD's, and putting them in raid 0 or 5 and then short stroking 2 or 3 just because of what Ive read about how it gives a 40% increase in performance. But that might be to much work considering I've never done it before Tongue

As for Trim, apparently there was a recent firmware update released that gave certain models the trim command, but i think you have to wipe your drive first or something.

Re: Raptor HDs
newegg canada > tigerdirect.

SATA 3 standard is backwards compatible with SATA 2 interfaces, buy it cuts the transfer speed in half which is gay. You can pick up a PCI card that will give you SATA 3 slots, probably $30-40?

Re: Raptor HDs
Ill look into the card, gonna stick with this mobo for awhile.

I got pissed when the newegg.ca site was launched, because it was right after i built this computer. Only thing is, their prices kinda suck as well Tongue

Re: Raptor HDs
yuh yuh yuh! 600 gig VR! That's the way baybee! Especially at that price. Just make sure you run it as your OS drive. I've got my 120 gig SSD as my OS drive, my 300 gig VR as my 2nd OS and games drive, and then 2 1.5 giggers for storage and my granny tranny pr0n. :-$ ;;)

That's a lot of porn, Sneye.

Get help.
Raise your right hand, and repeat after me.
I do solemnly swear,
To run like a Kenyan.
Teabag mofos.
And shoot 'em in the dick.

Re: Raptor HDs
Yes yes, the granny tranny porn takes up a lot of space. :ymsmug: Now, back to the original thingy.

Seagate just released the Momentus HD. It's' basically a combination of HD and SSD, VERY fast, 500 GB, and $120 on Newegg.ca from what I've just read. Probably your best bet.

Re: Raptor HDs
You have to be careful with which drives your looking at, only the Momentus XT is the hybrid drive, newegg does not have it as yet.

Its a laptop drive, 2.5", I'll probably get it though cause its using slc.

--

Just read up on how it works, the drive will look @ your usage patterns and w/e you seem to use the most, it will move those files to the flash portion of the disk to increase performance, so does that mean 4GB of the stuff you access the most will be using flash, and the rest will be using HDD technology, so 4GB will be fast, and the other 500GB will be slow>?
