DENDERMONDE, Belgium – A man went on a rampage at a Belgian daycare centre today, stabbing two young children and a female worker to death and slashing and severely injuring 12 other people, 10 of them children.

Sobbing parents rushed to the scene and to nearby hospitals. Shocked rescue workers spoke of finding crying, bleeding toddlers scattered inside the daycare.

Medical workers at six hospitals sprung into action, performing emergency operations to save the 10 children and two adults badly wounded in the attack.

The shocking assault caused panic and outrage in the town 30 kilometres northwest of Brussels, where the daycare centre sits on a residential street.

"An act of great brutality has happened here against our weakest citizens," said Mayor Piet Buyse. "The whole city is united in support for the parents who are in deep grief."

Prosecutor Christian Du Four said the attacker rode his bike up to the Fabeltjesland centre about 10 a.m., entered and immediately began slashing those inside with knife. The dead included two children – the oldest being a three-year-old – and a woman working in the centre.

After the mayhem, the attacker walked out of the daycare and got back on his bicycle before being arrested in a nearby supermarket shortly afterward, Du Four said.

Dr. Ignace Demeyer, head of emergency services at the Our Lady Hospital in nearby Aalst, said the 10 wounded children and two daycare workers underwent surgery at six hospitals. All were in stable condition tonight.

"This was a particularly violent attack. All the kids had multiple stab wounds on their legs, arms and all over their bodies," he told a news conference.

He said 21 children were at the centre during the attack, and nine were unharmed.

Police had to show distraught parents digital photographs of those taken to the hospital, asking them to identify their children.

Du Four did not immediately identify the suspect, who was injured as police detained him and briefly taken to a hospital.

Justice Minister Stefaan De Clercq said later the man was unco-operative under questioning. He did not elaborate.

Residents told The Associated Press the suspect was a local man with a history of mental illness.

Officials opened up a nearby community centre to provide psychological counselling to family members and witnesses, and police cordoned off the area.

"People are totally in shock," said Leene Du Bois, a spokeswoman for the regional government of Flanders. "Nobody would have imagined anyone could do so much harm. There is much grief."

She said the suspect had no connection to the daycare centre.

Officilas said Crown Prince Philippe and his wife, Princess Mathilde, planned to meet with the parents of the children.

Veerle Heeren, social welfare minister for the regional Flemish government, said she would be investigating security measures at the centre.

today in the newspaper they said the oldest child that died was not 3 years old, but 9 months and the other baby was only 6 months old!!

There also was something different that isnt mentioned in the article: people say it looks too much like the Joker from the last Batman movie:
It is a fictional character, but some people dont seem to be able to draw the line between fiction and reality:
he painted his face white and had painted around his eyes with black paint
and who knows a bit of history of the Joker:
his scar in his face: it came from his drunken father stabbing his in the face when he was a child
Joker is extremely violent and would have killed an entire class full of children
during police questioning the Joker would make 'jokes' and stuff like that, which this guy does aswell
and offcourse it happened one year and one day after Heath Ledger died


to make this a discussion: Should some types of fictional stories be banished for certain people? Its not the first time things like this happened.

the first thing most people want to do is blame something or somebody for the perpetrators actions. its really tragic what happened to those kids/adults at the daycare though. years of therapy and months of healing are ahead.

Yea really fucked up.

You can control shit like this... Pyscho's that cant be healed cannot be allowed to get out of theyre freaking rooms or jails where the f they place them. You hear it sooo many times.. They are released for a day. They go out with like 2 other bodyguards.. they escape and before you know it theyve raped 2 woman and nearly killed other people. Dont let them out.

Ive been on the train 4 years ago.. came across some hospital for psycho's the real nasty ones. Like 200 metres from the station itself. Many people got attacked theyre and they were even transporting them in the public train! Its just outta my mind.

some ppl just need to get their rights and priviliges removed, not only after they did something wrong, with some ppl u just can see from a mile away that they are up to something terrible, put them where they belong so things like these wont happen anymore, or at least not so often


and those were just babies, wtf did they do wrong??
just think of it, the parents had to identify their babies through pictures!! cause the scene was too messed up
personnaly, if i was one of the parents of those kids, i dont believe i would let that guy get away with it, lifesentence here in belgium is i think max 30years, thats way too low for those kind of guys :-s

although .. on a + side... most of thos e children are soo young.. i dont think they will remember... unless they are told of course.. but inwhich wont I dont think affect them toooo much..

Dont get me wrong though...that is totally. not something i condone.. is hurtin little children bc they wont remember...

yea like i said... they will ask when they are a bit older... how did i get that scar...

From there... it will be up to the parents whether or not they want to hide it from them for a while or tell them... either way... they shouldntbe affected too much by it... as by then it will have been 3+ years past.. they wont remember the incident itself.. I mean do you remember things from when u were young? i dont overly and Im 21..
my parents divorced when i was 4... I dont remember them ever being together.

Depends on the person. I can remember my first birthday, then there's a gap, then I remember learning to tie my shoes, nother gap, then I remember putting lizards and grasshoppers in my pocket and playing soccer with 'em in there when I was like 5.

Some of the kids might remember it, most won't though.
